Production draft

The Billboard draft with annotations.

The third page of my newspaper draft is divided into two sections one section is about the local major and his worry on the rise of knife crime in the community. The other section is an obituary of some of the people in the community that have unfortunately died in the year 2014. Both of these sections have mastheads to state what the stories are about, as it creates less confusion. The masthead house style is black and bold to stand out and it is there because my audience are more interested in the colour black featuring as a main colour in newspapers. The story of the local majors worry on crime will also feature a small but visible image next to it of the major so everyone recognises who it is, it also gives the newspaper story a more personal feel to it. Also underneath the image will feature a text box that states that the image is of the major and some general facts about him. On the obituary section of the newspaper page there will roughly be about five images of locals that have died in 2014, also next to the images there will text that will consist of the individuals names and how they died etc. also if there is any space underneath all of these images there will be a small graphic of a local charity that want to raise money for children with cancer in the community with a number that is featured with it, it can be seen as a helpline but to donate money, I have done this as I believe my audiences will be interested in it as they enjoy reading newspapers that feature helpline advertisements.

This second page of the newspaper draft shows that I will still be maintaining the theme of local knife crime throughout as the main story on this page is about a local young boy who has been murdered by a gang with a knife. The masthead will be at the top of the page in big bold black writing, as my audience would like to read a newspaper mainly in black and white. There will be a small long section on the left hand side of the page. This section will as well be in formal language as will all of the language used in the newspaper. Within this small section it will feature a masthead that related to the story and a small image underneath it that is relevant to the text about a local family that has gone through the pain of losing a child due to knife crime. The section next to that section will be the main story, you will know this as the top masthead that is the largest is about this large section. The text font of this will be black as well and of a small font size. There will also be an image next to the text that relates to the image (close-up picture of the young local boy that died). Underneath the image there will be a box of text that states this is the local boy that died with his name, age and hometown etc.). Also below the sections of text on the page there will be at least three images spread out of inspired CCT V camera shots of the night the boy died to give the newspaper more of a crime feel, as when we usually look at CCTV camera shots we automatically think it has to do with a crime. Underneath these images there will be text stating what these images are and what they show, so that audiences do not get confused on what these three images mean to the featured story.

This draft of my front cover shows I have looked at my survey responses from the audience and have featured the main story on crime, but more focused towards knife crime. The masthead, the newspaper name is at the top of the page as it will be easily recognisable to the audience. Also on my draft I have used three strap lines at the top of the page that related to the feature story, to make it clearer to the audience what this page is about. Half of the front cover page will be taken up with text of the story featured. The text colour will be black with a small font size, as my audience research shows that they prefer the colours black and white rather than it being colourful. The language of the text will be formal, as the story will be on a serious subject and that I am aiming my newspaper at middle aged individuals that are middle class. The layout of the images will be at the other side of the newspaper, there will be at least three main images that relate to the story, as my audience responded on the survey that they wanted some images to feature to the newspaper. The images will be of youth knife gangs, and that there will be a variety of shots, such as long, medium and close up shots. As these types of shots were seen as popular choices by my audience. Also on the front cover of the newspaper I am going to feature an advert that advertises the helpline charity ‘ Kid line’, the main reason why I have chosen this advert in particular is that my audience wanted to see a helpline advertisement , instead of music or a fashion one. For the advertisement I am using a graphic to symbolise it and give it some sort of logo. This would then attract my audience to read it or browse it as helpline charities are something they are interested in. The main house style colour of my newspaper front cover is black and white as that has been asked by the audience from the survey, or light blue colours as the survey shows men are most likely to buy my newspaper than any other sex, and that this colour is very formal and professional looking.

Radio script
The script

Purchase the latest edition of the local newspaper 'The local Gazette' which features the recent community struggle to combat knife crime and what our local victims think is the next step. Also find out what the local major has to stay about this current moral panic and what we can do to help. Tomorrows newspaper also includes the advertisements of the local charities 'Kidline' and 'cancerchild', which needs much support from you. Remember you can buy 'The Local Gazette' at any local news agents and supermarket near you, have a lovely day.

Improvements made to the script

Purchase the latest edition of  'The local Gazette' which features the recent community struggle to combat knife crime and what our local victims think is the next step. Tomorrows newspaper also includes the local charities 'Kidline' and 'cancerchild', which needs much support from you. Remember you can buy 'The Local Gazette' at any local news agents and supermarket near you. The Local Gazette 'Bringing you good news!'.
I have also taken out some words, as before the script tended to be a bit repetitive and not easy to read for the speaker.

Analysis of the radio script
This radio advertisement is going to be about roughly 30 seconds long, it will be quick and get straight to the point. The speaker for the radio advertisement will be female with a very posh soft tone to her voice. The reason for this is that from my filmed interviews I found out that most of my audience would prefer a female speaker, as their voices supposedly sound more sympathetic and that is needed when talking about sensitive topics, such as knife crime. I have also chosen for my radio advertisement to consist of what advertisements are in the newspaper, so that listeners are fully aware that these will feature as my survey analysis showed that my audience are interested in advertisements, such as charities and helplines. Also I have used formal language throughout, for example 'Latest edition', 'community struggle' and 'moral panic' to state a few. The reason why I have used formal language is because my newspaper is aimed at middle class individuals and their statistically more likely to understand what these phrases actually mean.

Analysis of the radio advertisement draft

As this is my radio advertisement draft I don’t expect it to be perfect, I aim to learn from my mistakes made here. The good points about this draft is that the speaker has a soft tone to her voice she connects with this serious topic which is important. Another good aspect of this radio advertisement is that the content of what the speaker is saying relates to the chosen topic ‘Knife crime’. The language the speaker uses is formal which links in with the target audience middle class individuals. As well as good points there are some bad. For example, the music is a bit ‘cheesy’ not really news like. Also the speaker at times has some hick ups, this may be due to the script not being structured to the best of the speakers ability. The quality of the radio ad draft is a bit ‘Fussy’ not clear, this may be due to background noise or the microphone not being close to the speaker. From this I aim to improve these weaknesses when creating my final piece I also want to add a tag line into the script so it sounds more news like and personal to the audience.
